Subtractive RP
Subtractive Rapid
Prototyping (SRP) - starting with a solid object and
removing unwanted material - has several advantages over
traditional rapid prototyping. Significantly less
expensive than rapid prototyping machines with the same
Resolution, SRP machines mill a wider range of materials
that cost less and have no need for chemicals or post
finishing work. Plus, they produce a superior finish.
Rotary
Axis (Optional)
The
optional rotary axis lets the MDX-650 produce faster,
more-accurate models. When one side is completed, the
part is automatically rotated until all four sides have
been milled. This saves engineers the time and errors
associated with rotating objects by hand. Loadable
workspace with the rotary axis is 7 7/8" (diameter) x 16
1/8".
Hi-Precision Spindle
A
Hi-Precision Spindle decreases vibration within the unit
and produces models that are more accurate. The spindle
has a rotation of 3,000 to 12,000 RPM and uses ISO15448
standard collets.
SRP
Software
Bundled
with all Roland SRP devices, the MODELA CAM software
package accepts DXF and STL files exported from
commercially available CAD/CAM software. The program
allows for uniform 3D scaling, selection of milling
direction and automatic generation and display of the
tool path. Cutting depths and speeds are controlled from
a predefined material library, or they can be set to
user-defined specifications. The MODELA CAM software
package is compatible with Windows® 95/98/NT.
Automatic
Tool Changer (Optional)
Designed
exclusively for the MDX-650 SRP system, the Roland
Automatic Tool Changer (ATC) further reduces the time
and cost associated with product development. From
roughing to finishing, this powerful accessory enables
the MDX-650 to mill prototypes completely unattended. It
automatically changes up to eight preset tools of
different sizes. When used in conjunction with the
optional rotary axis, it can change up to four different
tools. The ATC comes with an air-activated,
high-precision spindle.
Materials
The MDX-650
mills ABS, polyurethane, wax, aluminum, brass and other
non-ferrous metals. Ideal for milling high-precision
prototypes, Roland offers SRP boards made from Low
Density and Medium Density Urethane. Roland wax boards
are excellent for creating molds and models.
Safety
First
The
MDX-650's emergency stop switch enables you to shut down
the machine at the push of a button. An optional safety
cover makes the cutting mechanism inaccessible during
operation. It also prevents dust produced during the
machining operation from entering the surrounding
environment. This makes it possible to operate the
MDX-650 even in an office environment.
Fast &
Accurate
The MDX-500
and MDX-650 feature Feed Forward Processing (FFP) a
predictive technology that anticipates tool path for
greater accuracy, speed and energy efficiency. Roland
has combined FFP technology with belt drives and digital
AC Servo brushless motors on the X, Y and Z axes to
generate high speed and high torque for smooth, steady
milling.
